An introduction to the Bloxham Project

The Bloxham Project exists to support the spiritual dimension in education.  Linking school leaders, chaplains and teachers, the Project works to foster spirituality in schools and to bring religious insight to bear on educational practice.  Firmly rooted in the Christian faith, while open to other traditions, the Project offers pastoral and intellectual support for chaplains, school leaders – both heads and senior teachers – and others engaged in education. We also provide a range of high-quality professional development opportunities, offering clear educational input while drawing on the insights and experience of all participants.

The Bloxham Project’s key aims are to:

  • Promote a whole-person understanding of the educational process;
  • Provide challenge and support for school leaders and others working to embrace spirituality in their holistic vision of education;
  • Support the development of values-based leadership in schools and colleges;
  • Stimulate thought, reflection, debate and research on the spiritual dimension in education;
  • Link education professionals concerned with spirituality in a creative and developing network;
  • Dialogue from a Christian perspective with other religious traditions engaged in education.

Origins

The Bloxham Project’s origins go back to 1967, when a conference held at Bloxham School, Oxfordshire, explored issues of faith and spirituality in schools.  This led to a major research undertaking in the 1970s which studied the attitudes, values and religious beliefs of sixth-form students in schools of all kinds across the country. Since then, the Project has responded to the developing intellectual climate and the changing needs of schools and teachers, organising seminars, consultations and conferences and providing a network for the support of spiritual education. The Project’s developing mission remains rooted in the Christian tradition, while acknowledging the challenge and opportunity of the new, plural and multi-faith context.
